Notes About The Poem

inn

Listen to poem:

One last time

The fox keeps the keys
to the old henhouse.

The hour after 12 midnight
is called zero, until 1 AM.

The door marked EXIT
often opens both ways.

We fill the glass,
to toast our farewells.

A moth circles the lamp
knowing it has no
off-ramp.

A hand waving "Goodbye"
looks much the same
as the one saying "Hi".

Every disc has
a flip-side
to one-hand
clapping.

"The End" lies on
the last page,
but it's not the only
thing written there.

Going back is done
by doing a "U" turn,
not by backing up
in reverse.

The fisherman's last cast
always lands where
his others did.

Lips that frown
smile
when upside down.

The gambler knows he's done,
but bets 'all-in',
anyways.

The road to tomorrow
is crowded
with people
taking their last look
at yesterdays.

never again
just this once
one more time
just the one,
one last time!
one last time!

Hello John, a whole pocketful of truths gathered over a lifetime, each one turned over in the hand until it shines. I love how you move from wit to wisdom so effortlessly, letting the small observations open into something larger. A beautiful meditation on endings that never quite end. Blessings, Daniel
