One Intimidating Look

When I looked into his eyes, I neither saw nor felt love. There were an arresting darkness and smothering hate. Captured by the moment, I needed a way of escape. I remained a moment more, not knowing which path to take. The thought that I should not have looked never occurred to me. More than 40 years ago, I encountered the eyes of deceit. His eyes seemed to cast me into a mild freeze, rendering defeat. Some eyes defy any sense of calm or comfort and promote fear. Such eyes intimidate and seem to wrap themselves around you. Like the eyes of a demon, forcing one to stand down and question. I felt a cloud of darkness within his eyes, and slowly backed away. Not knowing what to do or what to say, I turned and looked away. I had little experience with such encounters, as I studied for my degree. One older and stronger than me, took command, calming that human sea. 05302017PS, edited for 2nd. entry, different contest, I Should Not Have Looked, Mystic Rose
