One Day In Spring

One Day In Spring Flowers falling to the ground from trees of Green all in a row Smiling faces, happy sounds, School is over for another day Where am I? You might hasten to say, under the shade of a tree in full flower The first of November is here again and so is the Sun without the rain The School bell tolls the end of day, students rushing by and still I wait But not for long she comes to me, "Hi Grandad, where's mum today? "She asked As I gently hugged her and kissed her head "She's busy and working hard today but never mind I'm here to take you home, so, here's the keys. Let's go." I parked the car where I usually do and my grand-daughter Who had not long turned eleven years of age had found it And had started the engine and wound down the windows I was surprised of course but she said, "Mum let's me do the same in our car" "I'll have to teach you how to drive then" I said and meant it too She nodded her head in agreement and gave out a loud "Yesssss" "Let's get you home then," and off we went The usual chatting took place between a grandad and grand-daughter Finally we reached her house and with a smile I kissed her head And waved good-bye The flowers are still falling here Now it's Spring in this land we call Australia
