One Cold Beer Too Many

one cold beer too many
and she's crying on the lawn
memorial parade going by
bands firetrucks baton twirlers
one cold beer too many
and the grill is forgotton
dinner is burning
the corn husks flaming in the dusk
one cold beer too many
and she's mumbling at the kitchen table
brave enough to say that she wishes
he'd stay
even though she knows
she drove him away
one cold beer too many
and she gets maudlin and reminicent
but the hard
cold
look in his eyes
shuts her down

Its not fictional, but also not autobiographical - don't worry! Not drinking or driving.... thanks for the comments!

Guess an extra drink will do that -- bring out the emotions we seek to squelch. Veronica, there is a Broadway show tune "One Rock and Roll too Many" and I found myself reading this poem with a similar rhythm. Very nicely composed! Love, Carolyn
