Once

There once was a time in younger days
When I knew a love, true and kind.
But my heart was fickle then
And I left him behind.
His heart was broken,
Words were spoken.
It ended
Sadly,
Once.

There once was a time in younger days
When I left a true love behind.
Another had caught my eye.
His heart was fickle too,
Making my heart blue.
Words were spoken.
It ended
Badly,
Once.

I often think back to younger days
When I knew a love, true and kind.
My fickle heart wanted more
And ended up with less.
I inflicted pain
For my own gain
And was wrong,
So wrong,
Once.

Hon, we all have to live with regrets like these. In youth our hearts are fickle; our attentions spans are short and we boldly seek out something new when we could just as easily take satisfaction in what we already have. Of course, we don't realize this until we get older and look back at the relationships we chose to end -- relationships that could have brought us a lifetime of happiness. Beautifully written, Francine. Love, Carolyn
