On Your Wedding Day

On this very special day So began the rest of your life. One of you became a Husband The other became a Wife. Some say marriage is an institution; But really it is an art, It began this day with the vows you made Not just spoken but committed from the heart..... To love and honour one another; By being ready to give and take, To show tolerance, understanding maybe forgiveness So the marriage bond will never break. To be there for each other, To encourage-to instil pride, To comfort, care, show compassion And always stand by each other’s side. To be aware of each other, Satisfy each other’s needs, To communicate from the mind and heart With kind words and loving deeds. To like each other, Value each other’s worth- Because as well as your lover your partner Should be your best friend on earth..... Marriage is what you both make it; A prison sentence with a ball and chain Where you feel bound with loss of personal identity Or a togetherness that will always remain, With a sense of belonging to someone And yet still feeling free. A true marriage is really beautiful The nearest thing to Divine Love that there could be..... And so now both of you Having taken this major step in life, May you live, prosper and LOVE each other In continued happiness as HUSBAND and WIFE. I wrote this for my son and daughter-in-law’s wedding.I have adapted it because for them it was more personal, dates names etc.I also had the privilege of reading it to them in church. They have been happily married now for twenty one years.

Hi June, Love your poem. I had to go through a very unhappy marriage but then 18 years ago, a boyfriend I had early in my twenties phoned me - we have been happily married for 18 years, a long way to go to reach all the undermentioned records but it is a divine like love we have for each other! Thank-you for sharing, all the best, xoxo Jennifer
