Oh My Child
Oh my child...
Where is the chubby cheeked, innocent, wide-eyed toddler I swear was just standing in your doorway?
Oh my child...
Who is this beautiful young girl standing beside her handsome father today?
Oh my child...
Who is this stranger who one minute is laughing with glee?
Who, in the blink of an eye, is pushing away from me?
Oh my child...
Who is this beautiful bewildered young person who is trying out the world that’s just too big sometimes?
Who will one day take the world by storm, but these things take time.
Oh my child...
As I held you as you sobbed tears of frustration at a grown up world that doesn’t quite always hear you,
I got a glimpse of the past when your worries were small and I could shield you.
In that brief moment I saw the future on where there will be moments I can’t protect you.
Oh my child...
My arms will always be waiting for you should you need a safe haven, even if your stay in them is but short.
Never forget I’m your biggest fan, your cheerleader, your unwavering support.
Oh my child...
You can choose how you wear the dress
Don’t forget to wear the crown that fits you best.
Polish or not, that’s your call.
Makeup, curls, hairstyles, try them all.
I’ll take your laughter, your smiles, your blues.
I’ll take your tears, your screams, your anger, your moods.
You are in that part of your life of change and uncertainty.
But no matter what, my child, you can always find a safe harbor with me.
