Off the Reservation

an aching heart
a silent tear
a boy in shreds
a man so near
a woman false
a mother cruel
control and
power
certainly rule

a ruined father
a frightened child
nothing gained
for quite a while

father stays
obligation
boy away
states away

yet still

cannot lift his eyes to strangers
lives outside the reservation
keeps himself off the chart
under the radar, miles apart
no family contact
nothing kind
under the bridge
hide in the park
old goodwill shirts
invisible
safe

well, maybe not. My work is about a young man ruined and afraid of himself because of a controlling mother-figure. Doesn't want to become his father. "Off the reservation" is a term used to describe people who live/choose to live outside the circle of normality either because that's where they cope, or that's where they are safe, or where they feel they are accepted. This term is often used by recovering addicts in self description.
