Notes About The Poem

I wrote a poem about marmite back in 2018 and have added more stanzas and tweaked it a bit.

Ode To Marmite

I like to start each day off right
With buttered toast and marmite
A vegetable extract that you spread
Across the surface of your bread.

So what’s in it, what does it contain?
Well thiamin, niacin and riboflavin
With B twelve vitamins and folic acid
The details you'll find on its yellow lid.

Also contains barley; wheats, oats and rye
Love it or hate you've just got to try
There are mores uses apart from toast
Like on potatoes with your sunday roast.

Or on crackers with your favourite cheese
I guarantee your taste buds you'll please
And maybe you like stew in cold weather
Add some marmite and it will taste better.

Or a tasty hot drink that'll keep out the cold
A strong savoury taste; it's pure black gold
There's much goodness in one small jar
But do use it sparingly and it will go far.

So the next time that you go out to shop
Look for a black jar with a bright yellow top
After your first taste you'll want more
You'll wonder why you didn't try it before.

What a wonderful write. First, I will check the stores. If I can't find it there, I will check out the web. They have everything. Did you know, you just let your secret out???? Young/long life and a great storyteller. Maybe I should order a case or two. Have a blessed day with your buttered toast and marmite......................

Ha Ha love your Marmite poem Tom. But I'm a Vegemite gal. Raised in Australia, thats what we grew up on. They're similar, but for me Vegemite tastes the best. Hmmm, now all this talk about it has got my taste buds going. Off to the kitchen for some Vegemite on toast. Yum yum! ;-D Cheers Anne :-)

Hello Tom ... yes Tom, love the taste of marmite, but here we have vegemite, a similar product that I believe is made from brewers yeast, so I enjoyed your verse very much explaining this mouth watering product - thanks Tom - Lindsay

This will be ideal for an advertisement, Tom :) I've never tried Marmite, probably because I was put off by Bovril, even though the contents are completely different...the jars are more or less the same except for labels and tops! ~ Regards // paul

Thank you Paul out of the two I'd prefer marmite, but a cup of hot bovril goes down well on a cold day. Marmite is more for spreading on toast but has many other uses. Hope you're keeping well. Tom

Gawd, how I hated this stuff as a child, it was far to strong for me then, but hey, things have change and I love it now, it's packaging has never really changed, you can spot it a mile off on the shelves, my favourite is a backyard fire with baked spuds in their skins, once the spuds are baked scoop the filling out and add a little bit of butter and a little bit of Marmite and mash it all up, stick it all back in the skins and yum yum : )

Mmm sounds delicious, there is so many uses for it, I put it on everything. Never tried that with the baked spuds but ill have to now. Enjoy the heatwave they've forecast. Tom

Thank you very much Robert, I read that some stores in the US sell it, importing it with other European foodstuffs, I know you can order it off Amazon. The secret is to spread it thinly on toasted bread as its quite strong. Tom

This poem took me back to my boarding school days Tom, many moons ago, we used to pretend to be sick and not go to class for two reasons, one was to swot for an exam the next day, and the second was we got a cup of marmite and 2 pieces of toast! Imagine, we could have whatever we wanted when at home, but Marmite, toast and time to swot, was just the 'thing' as a boarder at the Convent. Love the poem. Blessings, Jennifer.

Well, I guess the vitamins in it would be good for most people. I looked it up and it is a byproduct of the beer brewing industry. Years ago the doctor prescribed Brewer's Yeast to my mother who was anemic. I guess she got it and took it anyway she got better. I enjoyed reading this one and learning something new. I don't think I would want to try it. I would rather take a pill. Thanks for your visit to my page. Sara
