Ode To a Generous Friend

Ode to a Generous Friend

I’ve a long time friend
That loves to go fishin’
Where you throw out some bait
While doin' 'strong wishin'

That something down under
Will be there just waiting
That you’ve made the right guess
When pickin’ you baiting.

Well he seems to have good luck
When he goes to those “great lakes”.
Up North to boundary waters
Near a week, it often takes.

They fish from sun up
Till way late in the day.
More hours than they’d work :o)
But for them this is “play”.

There are strict government limits
On the number you can keep.
Sometimes it’s a real struggle
To pull them up from the deep.

But as is often the case,
He caught there his limit
From his good fortune
We so often share in it.

My wife’s a real fish lover
Just beams when she hears
He’s brought her fresh fish
As he’s done many years.

They come to our kitchen
All cleaned and filleted
No easier fish dinner
Ever could be made.

This time it was great Walleye
Plus some Northeren pike cuts.
He supplied a good variety
We won’t experience a flavor rut.

They went up in the freezer
But will be eaten real soon.
Frying fish is a science
To get the smell from the room. :o)

A few days ago, I spotted
Thawing fish on the bar
Of course as a signal
Fried fish can’t be far.

I knew for my dinner
A big treat lay ahead
When I took my first bite
I sounded out of my head.

It was breaded, with a crust
Never tasted any better
I knew there and there,
Best write him a letter.

Of course my wife loved it
She’d eat fish a bit more.
When a friend brings it “fresh”
You know good eating’s in store.

Today we're at a garage sale
Our daughters are having.
I’m a sucker for a bargain
Try to do some deal grabbing

There was a little fish creel
Reminded me of my friend.
I brought it home proudly
And to him I will now send.

Once again I cheat a card shop
Out of 4 or 5 buck$
 I’ll send him this rhyme
As it’s one of oldbucks

I’ve often heard said:
But not sure who raised the chatter
“It’s not the gifts cost”
“But the thought that should matter”.

So: Here now sent to my friend
Is a bit of good humor.
Maybe sometime at a party
A good “white elephant” mover. :o)

Written by oldbuck, July 28, 2017, as a greeting to accompany a silly gift, purchased as a way to thank a friend for a thoughtful gesture. One of those little gifts that may have been a greater blessing to give than receive. :o)

Daniel: Most of us don't make much if any money at this, so comments from readers are a big reward. Thank you for reading and commenting on my silly stuff. I'll try to get back to yours but there are soooo many writers to chose from it's hard to pick. oldbuck

Dean: You don't understand. Among my small group of friends, the only way I get them to accept one of my rhymes is either to mention them in it or offer a gift along with it. :o) In this case I did both. I've not heard back from him yet. :o( Thanks for your comment. oldbuck

Jan: Sometimes it's the thought that counts. And I gave this rhyme some thought. :o) It's always good to find your comment among the short list that do. Thank you for your "always" kind remarks. oldbuck

This reminded me of Canada, where there are walleye, Northern Pike, Bass and muskellunge. ! Nice of you to write for your friend :)

Heidi: These fish were caught so close to Canada they probably spoke "broken French". :o) Thanks for reading and glad you found some enjoyment in it. oldbuck
