October History
I wrote these when the Soup was down and had no place to share them
History of the Day
Oct 15th
This is the anniversary of the first draft card burning
It happened at Berkeley when the country was turning
From support of the war and the peace all were yearning
It didn’t stop the drafting; it didn’t stop the war
It didn’t stop at Berkeley but happened more and more
And it got the country thinking – what are we fighting for
We thought we had to do it when the war did start
But I really can’t condone it; we all should do our part
But give the guy some credit; he did it from his heart
Oct 16th
That “Let them eat cake” was such a low blow
The populists decided she had to eat crow
The year was 1793
The Antoinette we called Marie
Was led to the gallows on this very day
With the drop of the knife, her head rolled away
For the knife was sharp and the cut was clean
And that was the end of the French King and Queen
Oct 17th
On this day in 31
Al Capone was finally done
Convicted then of tax evasion
By accountants math equations
Eleven years his sentence said
A stroke and syphilis left him dead
And remember back in 89
World Series baseball time
Earthquake off the Richter scale
San Francisco faces pale
66 were killed that day
As roads and bridges all did sway
