Note On the Refrigerator
Did I ever tell you
how beautiful you are?
Casually, one morning
(with the bathroom door ajar)
as I said we need more toothpaste,
or I’m off at quarter-to,
did I hold you, as I wanted?
Did I mention it to you?
Did I ever say I need you
like the wheat needs sun and rain?
Did I point out that I’ll never
find a girl like you again?
Did I state that every busy hour
my thoughts to you incline?
It was on my things-to-do list,
and it must have slipped my mind.
I wonder if I thanked you
for being at my side,
or said that when I’m with you,
how I’m all pumped up with pride.
Have I told you I adore you
when you kiss my weary brow?
Forgive me if I didn’t, love.
And so I’m saying it now.
