Not Ready For My Close-Up

My teeth have gotten crooked.
My eyes sport puffy bags.
My lashes lost their lushness
And my neck, once taut, now sags.

My wrinkles now have cousins
Come to line my washed-out skin,
But it isn’t any mirror that
Reveals the shape I’m in.

For that white-haired older lady,
Peering back across the room,
Is the way the whole world sees me
When I’m on the screen on Zoom.

I did not remember until right now I once had a friend who was twenty one years older than I was. She was 65, and she told me she always wears a scarf to cover her neck because it aged her more than anything else. Thanks for the reminder - this poem brought it right back!

We may well be laughing on the outside. The question is, are we crying on the inside?! (I am, a bit). :) gw

Welcome to the club, Ilene. I have photos of myself of 30-50 years ago. I look nothing like them? Self-deprecation requires humility which makes me the humblest man on earth! / Maurice

Well said, but I can tell you are not old enough yet for your eyes to blur out all the detail! Aloha! Rico

LOL. Heartily. Loved this verse, Ilene. We're all getting to that place where we don't recognize the s/he in the mirror! They say I've gone grey, but I say I've inherited my grandfather's lovely white hair. So there!

LOL This is great Ilene. Reminds me of the old lady in my mirror who won't go away. Really good one. Love it. A fave for me. God Bless, JB

Judy, I'm not Ilene, but I suspect that "old lady" in your mirror has moved into stay. Soon she'll want her own bedroom!
