Notes About The Poem

Not a Give and Take

Some people think that love is easy…
that it’s a piece of cake
as long as we remember…
that love's a give and take.

I think the heart is more fragile than that…
that’s it’s easy to bruise…
to break…
and though I do think love is something you give…
I don’t think it’s something you can take.

I think of love more as a gift.
A gift…that once declared
is to be opened up together…
to be cherished…
to be shared.

Which means if we want love to be easy
to be a piece of cake
then we must think of it as more…than a simple give and take.

For love to work as it is meant to work…
once it’s given…I believe
It’s not something you take
It’s something you receive
