No Sleep Animals

Moonlight shines
In the warm night air
Casting shadows
That are not there

A touch on my neck
Brings me to shake
How many hours
Have I been awake

I’m hearing voices
And seeing faces
That hurry off
To their darkened places

They’ve always been here
Or so it seems
Skittish rodents
Of my deepest dreams

No sleep for days
Grants power to see them
I glance at my side
And conscious I see him

I feel I have sinned
Because of his fear
I should not have seen him
Not while I’m here

And into the darkness
He runs but why
Soft from the black
I hear him cry

To start to explain
These things from tonight
I’m scared to begin
It cannot be right
