No Reflection (Till the Angels Bring Me Up to You)

All by myself, the grass is green The sky is blue—the streets are mean The road is winding, there's no straight way When I ask my self why we often stray. The lives we live are make-believe The dreams of others as they conceive The way they think life aught to be, But there never seems a place for me I gird myself; I trudge along I sing myself a fighting song I break the dream I find the true And in love's gleam, I wait for you All by myself, the nights are cold Your face, a mem'ry that I hold Your heart, a fire that warms my soul That gives me strength to keep control To trust in us and make it thro' When doubt and fear don't know what to do Come rescue me then I'll rescue you If we trust in love we'll make it thro' If we trust in love we'll make it thro' Till the angels bring me up to you Just trust in love, we'll make it thro' Till the angels bring me up to you But in the mean' just seventeen And life just seems so cold and mean I ask myself how long it's been Since I laughed or even felt a tiny grin Come wash away all this sullen gloom That glares the corners of my shadowed room Curtains drawn A listless fawn Wond'ring where poor mother an' father've gone Were they a dream Why can't I scream Why can't I see my reflection in this sudden stream Within these sudden woods As sudden as these ever-changing moods As sudden as death comes—intrudes Interrupts and tries destroy A love thought a cute soon forgotten toy Come rescue me then I'll rescue you If we trust in love we'll make it thro' If we trust in love we'll make it thro' Till the angels bring me up to you Just trust in love, we'll make it thro' Till the angels bring me up to you Love, still gleaming— Even in the cold and dark Life's still dreaming Even when it's stark And there's just no room for me Please—come rescue me
