No Birds Sing
Dawn nears, no birds sing
Corruption fills the air.
Just beyond our trench they lie,
Corpses here, and there.
Corpses that were comrades
Once alive and full of vigour,
Now there they are, in the mud
Dead, and stiff with rigor.
Just a day or so ago
They were telling nervous jokes,
Checking out each others kit,
Grabbing crafty smokes.
But now they lie, mouths agape
White as porcelain,
Heroes they, every one.
We'll not see their likes again.
