Notes About The Poem

Night's Gentle Keeping

Dusk drapes its shawl across the land,
softens each stone with silver sand;
the sky leans low as stars expand~
all held in night’s gentle keeping.

Cicadas sing their twilight hymn,
the horizon grows wide and dim;
the moon lifts past the canyon rim~
all held in night’s gentle keeping.

Old stories rise where shadows twined,
whispers the daylight left behind;
the world exhales its quiet mind~
all held in night’s gentle keeping.

And I, beneath this settling blue,
feel time grow tender, slow, and true;
the dark restores what daylight knew~
all held in night’s gentle keeping.

A beautifully serene kyrielle, with its recurring line creating a tender, sheltering cadence throughout. The soft dusk imagery, cicadas, canyon moonrise, and “settling blue” give the poem a spacious, contemplative atmosphere, while the final stanza deepens that quiet into a feeling of restoration.
