Nightmare

NIGHTMARE

Last night I’d
A dreadful dream
Walking, shivering
Under a dark sky,
Rain draining down
My torn coat.
No heart
To go further
Along the road,
And no turning
Back.
Lost and tossed.
You were gone
And I through
The ripped fabric
Felt my raw
Life’s dregs ebbing
Drip by
Drip.

I awoke
And you came back with the sun.
My heart swelled and stretched to meet your sweet smile
Then next breath I stepped out fast with spring another mile.
