Night Time Fears

Here I am awake again the night as black as hell Is there someone out there so dark I cannot tell Mostly everyone's asleep there is no sound there's not a peep Am I the only one awake it feels that way this brand new day I’m looking for the moon to see but even she's not there for me No stars that twinkle up above even Venus Goddess of Love forsakes me as I search in vain her sparkling face I yearn to see But now the dark is scaring me has the world come to an end I’m here completely on my own alone without a friend No one is here I’m full of fear and on my cheek a single tear But wait ~ is that a sound I hear a sound I love ~ a sound so near to free me from the nightmare that entombed me all night long The sweetest blackbird serenades me with his early morning song and as the darkness of this night begins to vanish I see the light Fears fade into oblivion as this darling blackbird sings his song And one by one my night time fears are banished with my night time tears My handsome blackbird sings his song and all my night time fears are gone … Written 18th April 2020 Contest Strand Pick C Sponsor Brian Strand HONORABLE MENTION

No idea why nighttime fears are so much more intense than daytime fears; maybe because of the dark? The shadows? You have said this well.

the night comes with its unseen whips to the mind. But if the uncertainty of sight in the dark can be overcomed, the fear becomes unreal and unfelt. A masterpiece here full of incredible creativity.

Congratulations on Honorabe Mention, ANN. IT'S SO PERFECT, GOODNESS, First place seems more fitting. I love the quiet of the night... And am more fearful in the day when the news does the Fear Monger Tango! Kudos, Panagiota xx

Hi Ann, A fine piece telling your sleep problems something that so many experience, Nice to hear the birds in the morning light, are you in the country, I expect if you can hear the birds. I've just ordered from Amazon a box set of Ill Progretto Vivaldi by Sol Gabetta, think it was released 2017. Hope all good with you my dear friend, Keep safe, Gordon

Hello Gordon, good to hear from you my friend. Thank you so much for your lovely comments and yes it is so good to hear the dawn chorus, although I mostly hear the seagulls as I live next to the sea, which I love, though not so fond of the marauding gulls! Keep safe and well Gordon With kindest thoughts Ann xx Wow, Gordon that box set will be amazing - sit back and enjoy it and let me know if you recommend it

i can relate to the poem in so many ways as I've had sleep issues since hubby had his cancer surgery - what a joy it is to hear the blackbird chirruping the sweetest sounds:-) had a bad week, lost my uncle (to dementia) and three friends. its so hard not to be able to pay our respects and be there to give our support:-( hugs Jan xx

Oh dear, what a sad time for you dear Jan, I was so sorry to hear that. Thank you for your comments; my sleep problems started after I lost my Frank and now I barely get more than 2 to 3 hours sleep before I wake. Keep safe and well my friend. With kindest thoughts Ann xx

For those in the dark - especially those with freezing buns - the first light of dawn is more inspirational than any song! Aloha! Rico

Thank you Tom, yes I was awake in the early hours so wrote this on my tablet, at some unearthly hour! Normally the small birds start to sing the dawn chorus early here, before being drowned out by the marauding seagulls, who often screech so loudly the others cannot get a word in edgeways haha.. have a peaceful weekend and you too keep safe my friend. With kindest thoughts Ann xx
