Night Sounds
Did you hear that click?
Some unfamiliar noise up in the attic.
A tap, a knock up in the ceiling floor
where footsteps rise and fall in the wall's decor.
In the darkness of the night
eyes wide open in fright
of some creature in the rafters
chewing and scratching at the plaster.
I pull the covers up snug
while the dog lies attentive on the rug,
his eyes glowing in reflected light
of all the creeps and crawls at night.
There it goes again,
a pair running in unison
and beneath the blankets I quake
waiting for morning light to break.
I scan the room in disbelief
the furnace kicked on to my relief.
