New Orleans

our jazz horns and your blues
Your night life and your cruise
Through plantations of history
Down long rivers of memory
Speak of throbbing multitude
Lost in the forest of time's solitude.
The moon wax and wane of emperors
Truths that fall like sandcastles of errors
What have lost in them, we poor, blind
Gamblers? What in pleasure do we find
That make us need the next one more
Than we did the certain on before?
New Orleans, city of water, levity, lights
And the haunting streets of long nights,
Will masquerade or mask confess, we
Are under Eden's duress? O melody,
O melancholy, O loneliness bruising now
The heel of the boy and forgotten plough.
