Never So Beautiful

As I drove, we talked of sad things Our things, shadows from our pasts You took my hand then, in yours And we cried for those shadows Your hand felt so good in mine Like it was part of me, yet still yours Then you said my hands make you feel good And the light claimed my shadows Your tears reddened your deep blue eyes And left a small stain where they’d trickled Carrying a small river of mascara Down your smooth cheek, like a shadow You told me not to look at you then, The tears had somehow made you less Less pretty, less lovely, somehow less But you could never be more beautiful Than when your tears showed your heart to me
