Never Give Up

When I was at the pit of depression
Could not stop stressin’ to myself
And I was so upset that
I was not yet a success and
I counted no blessings

And since life was a process of withering
Life was death, and not worth living in

Meanwhile I’m harassed with absurd slurs
Crushed by hurled disturbing words
Blurred into one hurtful whirl stirred into this girl

Loathing, floating in my own coating
Of swirling self-pity, until I go dizzy

And the drugs didn’t motivate me
And neither did the therapy
This is the depths, simultaneously the canopy

What merits me to inherit this unbearable insanity?

But I was alive, even if it was like a full time job,
I survived, my soul evolved
My life wouldn’t end unresolved

Here we are
And I’m glad that I stuck through
One must feel stuck in a cocoon
To break through as a butterfly
And see the rainbow
At the end of the typhoon

What changed?
I didn’t give up
I scoured medications and treatments
Like gold being struck
In a dark, dark mine of lesions

In patient therapy
Programs specifically for OCD,
MDD, ADD, anxiety, apparently
I had autism too–
No wonder I never felt free

Socialized with new friends
And spent more time mobilized
Ate a little better, slept sounder
In a new bed and

Found some enjoyment
In listening to boom bap CDs
Turns out there’s plenty of fish
I’d never seen in the sea

These simple things can be so moving
The butterfly effect of a mood improvement

So, please, I was there too
Never give up, but joy won’t find you
You have to search for it
Again and again

I know it evades,
But someday,
Even if it seems like the end,

Sooner or later,
That end ends instead.
