Author's Notes: "Nefarious Spirit" is a couplet poem I completed on March 8, 2018. The theme of this poem takes the reader through a walk on the dark-side of the human psyche, and in certain respects, the darker aspect of human nature. I would naturally expect the reader to form his or her own conclusions about this write and what it portrays relevant to the poem's protagonist, to whom I refer to as the "Human Creature," which can be specifically likened to a man or a woman or both, and to the species order of mankind (humankind) in general. (Gary Bateman -- March 8, 2018) (Couplet)

Theme Categories: dark, emotions, evil, feelings, metaphor, spiritual, and symbolism.

Nefarious Spirit

The Human Creature is not exempt
As the nefarious spirit lives within.

Even the saintliest of us all have
A touch of the nefarious within.

My secret is that I am with you always—
When you’re awake, asleep, and dreaming.

I am your alter ego at times and even
That dark shadow in the room beyond.

When you gaze into your morning mirror—
I am there too as only a faintly bare existence.

Don’t look too hard and too deeply into the mirror—
For I shall disappoint, become invisible, and disappear.

In your evil-thinking moments of anger and rage,
I shall hunt others for you at your behest and desire.

But I shall haunt you and surely play on your emotions,
If you’re wrong about the others, no matter who they be.

Being an uncanny spirit of action, sorrow, and chaos
I can act on a moment’s notice and bring pain to bear.

I live in the deepest, darkest chasm of your inner psyche,
Be sure to use me wisely—whilst showing all due care!

Gary, an awesome, deeply meaningful and thought provoking poem.. I do believe that we (all humans) possess the duality of good and evil within ourselves, as the concept of free will would dictate having the internal ability to think and voluntarily choose our actions and face the outcomes thereof.. beautiful and compelling use of metaphor illustrates the darkness in your brilliant poem wondrously. Warmest wishes my friend and a fave! ~Susan

Hello Dear Anne-Lise, Thanks for your read here. This one could fit some theme for a horror movie -- LOL!! Yet, this one was, for me, as I thought about really had not only a sense of the "unknown" about it, but a touch of the metaphysical too. I may do some more of these in the future. Both Ingrid and I wish you wondrous and peaceful weekend. Best . . . Gary!!

Good advice Gary--it's within us ..and up to each of us to be self-aware when darker emotions try to take over. Great theme!

Thanks Vijay!! The theme for this particular poem came to me a couple of days ago, and I decided to capture it and get it down on paper before it disappeared. A touch of the nefarious spirit does live within all of us. Thanks for your read and great comment here!! Best Always, Gary

I try not to summon mine very often for he never wants to go home but yes, every human has one. Some control it better than others. This is a wonderful poem Gary.

Thanks Danny for your great comment here. And, you're certainly right, some do control it better than others. As I mentioned to Vijay above, the idea for this one just came to me out the blue a couple of days ago. Our inner psyche is full of surprises for sure!! Best Wishes, Gary
