My Scraggy Cliff

On a high and scraggy cliff above the soggy sea There, there my memory drifts, to find the things That so enamored me. A gull aloft in silent glee Upon the eye, happy longings and wonder brings And a child's desire to fly And a child's desire to fly The waves foaming white, unsaddled, wild and free Gallop on the blue terrain, gallop to the shores And in my fancy the freed spirits billowing call to me Come we are freedom's chosen doors, sweet doors From life's chain of poverty From life's chain of poverty I loved their tease, their seductive calls, like I love Women full of zest and daring, but I was not drunk at all To plunge and leave the beauty framed by the above To waste without a paramour. But each spray would fall On the flowers of my heart On the flowers of my heart Growing on the grimy gorge of rock, resplendent in the sun A beauty unsurpassed in gold, in vanity and in show A tough shrub almost like marigold, where little crabs run My scraggy cliff, my heights above ships distant glow My favorite place to dream My favorite place to dream
