My One Night of Chivalry

She was all of twenty-two
And I was twenty-five
Experiences, I had a few
I was hitting my sexual stride

She was pure and innocent
When she made this request of me
Would I please be the first
To remove her virginity

Now, I’ll admit I was horny as hell
And she was a beauty queen
But to do what she was asking me
Would have been purely obscene

The first time that she makes love
She deserves the very best
A man who loves her with all his heart
I would surely fail that test

I showed her what a man looks like
But wouldn’t allow her to touch
She wanted me to lay in bed with her
But I knew that would be too much

She thought that I was rejecting her
As tears ran down her face
Nothing could be farther from the truth
It was just the wrong time and place

I don’t know why I was so chivalrous
It had never happened before
I left her alone in my room
And paid for my first whore

When I returned to my apartment
There was a note taped to the door
Saying not to worry none
She wouldn’t bother me any more

I’ve often wondered since that night
Did my actions work as planned
Did she wait for the perfect time
Or just find another man

She was all of twenty-two
And I was twenty-five
I always will remember you
As long as I’m alive

Joe, it was really kind of you not to fulfill your desires and put her needs ahead of your own. If this is based on truth, I do hope she found a man who loves her to this day. Have to admire the way you handled this. Excellent poem! Love, Carolyn
