My Memory Box

Hidden and dusty I open the lid,
things I've collected since being a kid,
lollipop sticks with names, dates and places,
photo's of friends- forgotten faces.

A medal I won for being so good,
a big wooden cross I made out of wood,
a valentine card from whom I don't know,
precious keepsakes of a time long ago.

Secrets of loves once a fleeting romance,
just for a moment I sit lost in a trance,
Yet, I must not let them make me feel sad,
to hold onto memories, I keep them be glad.

My smile when touching these things from the past,
makes me recall that the good times don't last,
now closing the lid lost way back in time,
think of the future and the hills still to climb.

Faded and tattered now the box hides away,
knowing it will be there to remember one day,
outside I venture over hills, over dales,
collecting more memories- my future tales.
