My Life

My Life
Kevin Davis 2025

My life has always been filled with and guided by hope. As a baby, my hope was expressed by crying to cope, to remove the pain, to be changed, cuddled, played, or fed. Once the need was fulfilled, the crying stopped; off to bed.

When a toddler, my hope became more about having things: like birthdays, Christmas, cartoons, ice cream, and dreams. Skills such as baseball, tree climbing, swinging, and friends seemed to be worthy of hopes and became my fate’s trends.

Then came the first years of school, and hope was different; it became learning many new things like reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic, making new friends and becoming more content. As I advanced in school, seeing my body changing brought new hoping.

Hair on my chest and arms and other places made me aware that soon I would be old enough to see myself finally a man. My voice deepened, I started to shave, and girls would stare. Was it that I was just clumsy and thin, or was I now part of the clan?

Next came high school, and I continued to learn, finding new skills and courage to change. Taking chances to learn new social skills, and relate to others in many new ways, hoping against hope that others would find me someone to like.

On to the Army and continuing to learn that I was a competent and skillful part of the team. Able to face what was required of me and defend my unit even if it meant my life. By the end of my time, I had become honored by others and could fulfill my role without strife.

Hope followed me to college and in my field, I learned quickly, socially I found myself part of a group, others I did not have to shield. But learning was my primary goal wanting to know how I would spend my life’s goal, and so I took my degrees now ready to come in from the cold.

My first jobs were just to find a way to pay the bills, then finding one in my field as hoped provided me thrills. I progressed rather slowly, each month a new challenge, to find the right place for me and my skills that applied them with balance.

One day out of the blue I was working a menial position in my field, I saw a young lady and was immediately smitten, a desire to win her I hoped to reveal. But could she feel the same, I had no idea, but she gave me no sign but a sidelong glance, and I asked her to lunch, and she said yes.

I continue my hopes in my field and continue to pursue the girl, somehow finding the time to give both the needed attention, a real ordeal. I found a new job that made use of my skill, I asked the young lady to be my wife, and she said yes and oh what a thrill.

We now are at retirement and together that young lady and I continued our hopes and together did thrive, after a lifetime of love for each other I found and hope I have been a man who has been there for all that I worked. A lifetime of service with kindness and hope.
