My Feelings About Zoos

I love them, I hate them, and I despise them. They have me on the run.
It is great at Halloween to see the rhino with his pumpkin fun.
He rushes toward this vegetable and throws it into the air.
Children hold their breath. Some cannot watch, others dare.

I have mixed feelings about zoos for I hate to see animals confined.
And yet I know these are well taken care of, and not in cages straw-lined.
They are in almost a natural habitat, and are seen regularly by a vet.
Many wild animals would enjoy this free perk I would bet.

The zoos of old caged the animals and it made me dour and sad.
I blew my gasket, and complained loudly to both Mom and Dad.
But today’s zoos are kind, and the animals seem content.
I am going this afternoon to a pumpkin-pie eating event.

Your poem could well be a microcosm Caren, I sometimes think this whole world is a zoo and perhaps a holding area, We are free but also confined by the laws of physics, until we figure out who keeps us here and why, cheers David

I don't like seeing caged animals or birds. But Zoo's can be a safer place for animals to survive than the jungle also not many of us see animals in their natural habitat. Good for children, artists etc...

I couldn't agree more, Caren. The last time I was at a zoo--San Diego to see the pandas, I was most impressed. The caretakers seemed to really love the animals and most were in their natural habitats. Made me realize if it were not for zoos, many of us would never see these animals live.

i guess many species would be at risk of extinction if it wasnt for breeding programmes in zoo, prefer for them to be in their natural habitat, but they are at the mercy of men:-( hugs jan xx
