My Favorite Mistake

I've made them before and I'll make them again,
It's the first and only time I'll fall in love with my best friend.
The first love I've had and the one to make me laugh
The one who held me when I cried and the one who broke me in half.
You were the one who made my heart swell when I heard your name
You broke me again and again, and I still played your game.
It's not like we haven't tried over and over again,
But this is the lesson; don't love your best friend.
You were the one I truly, really loved
You mattered to me, and yet, I only remember what was.
I don't want to be mean or single you out
But you were the only one I ever cared about.
I'm a willing player in this sick, torturous game
But now you've moved on and forgotten my name.
I can't be friends because whether I'm dreaming asleep or awake
I always remind myself you were my favorite mistake.
