My Duck Friends

For years I’ve seen a pair of ducks In front of a fountain close by. They swim or sit and those who notice Likely wonder why. The fount’s in the front of a building; Pedestrians pass night and day And the street’s filled with traffic and noises, Which you’d think would just scare them away. In addition, this year there’s construction, With drilling and scaffolds and nets. For some ducks maybe raising a family, It’s as stressful as city life gets. Yet this morning, my duck friends were waiting, As indifferent as creatures can be. Their return was, to them, nothing special, But it sure brought some smiles to me.

So nice. I feel that way about the swallows that normally return to our house each spring

A smashing depiction of your visiting feathered friends, Ilene. We still have our crash landing kamikaze ducks down everyday and two are looking to nest beside our pond… lovely to see the ducklings when they arrive but the pond will be the colour of mud. Enjoyed another day through your window on the world. Terry

Dear Ilene, Your poem reminds us of the simple joys found amidst the hustle and bustle of city life. Through your lovely words, you capture the resilience and grace of nature, embodied by the steadfast presence of your duck companions. Despite the chaos and construction surrounding them, they seem to embody a sense of calm and continuity, bringing peace to those who pause to notice. You show us how to find beauty in the mundane and to cherish the unexpected moments of connection with nature. Blessings, Daniel
