Music To My Ears
We've shared a bed for so many happy years
I've gotten accustomed to sleeping by your side;
as a couple, we've shared both smiles and tears.
Having spent most of my life tethered to your heart,
I've found peace of mind lying next to you;
in all those years, we've never slept apart.
The best part of my day is cuddling with you at night;
but there are times when your breathing is so shallow
I fear you've died, and I check if you're all right.
I reach over and ever so gently shake you,
and when you react, I feel so relieved
that my nightmare has not come true.
Love has kept us together for more than fifty years
and every night before I sleep, I listen for your snore;
a reassuring purring that is music to my ears.
