Ms Cricks Christmas Gift

Wilbur had been thinking about his teacher's gift all night
A bag of onions, that all we can give Miss Cricks?
His mother said “it will be more than enough”.
He thought it was a sad offering, felt embarrassed.
Lollygagged to school, arrived late, stayed in the doorway.
The bag behind his back, a burden, proof of their poverty.
Miss Cricks smiled and invited him in. He did not want to go.
