Mommy Dearest

I’m trying to unlearn the sting of your name
I’m trying to uncarry the weight of the blame
You love to sweep our mess under the rug
I can’t even remember the last time we hugged
I was always treated as the black sheep daughter
I looked for your love but you couldn’t be bothered
My childhood traumas became your taboo
You wanted me out, you said we were through
My aching depression, you called it the ‘blues’
Til I took a toaster bath and it finally broke you
That was the first time I ever heard you cry
Cuz you’ve been at my throat and I never knew why
I forgive you because in the end you’re my mother
Even if I hate it, there will never be another
If you died tomorrow I don’t know that I’d ever recover
But thank you for taking care of me and my brothers
And I’m sorry that we never got it quite right
Our relationship was always built out of spite
But maybe one day we’ll end this lifelong fight
And maybe, just maybe, we’ll actually be alright
