Mental Illness
Too late for contest
I remember my first experience
On my school bus, as it came to a stop
A sadness that was mysterious
Suddenly, my heart dropped
It came in a wave, thick and intense
My entire body felt it
It’s been weighing me down, ever since
To my soul, it was welded
When I told my mom, it broke her heart
She, too, was trapped in this agony
For, this was the single worst part
Of herself, she could pass down to me
Turns out, I come from a long line
Of highly troubled souls
Just bark off the old pine
That my family tree holds
I’ve come to know the appearance
Of a person carrying this burden
I can’t say their exact experience
But can detect this type of hurting
So I use my pain to understand others
When no one around them can see
I try and help them clear the clutter
At the same time, giving purpose to me
