Measure For Measure
We measure everything
According to life's rules we keep
Happiness is even weighed
After and before we go to sleep
Hardships are all put in a row
Evenly, within time's linear cup
And exactly placed like
Fine silverware from Newton's table
For when we discuss and sup
Yes, we measure everything
And we ourselves are put to rule
From the moment we take a breath
And even after we are pulled
From our mother's womb
And by the way...
Also, at the tomb
For we need to fit
That certain box
Or get tossed aside
Like an uncounted bag of rocks
Yes, we measure everything...
Even the number of the lines
A sizing poet writes
For getting things just exactly right
Gives immeasurable and joyous flights
Yes, we measure everything
As we're stood against a double door
Above our head, a line is drawn and pencil scored
As we grow and even as we chore
I have to say, as I truly measure myself, from day to day...
Sometimes, I'd like to take the gage and hide
But, only for a measured moment...
Until I'm sure I'm tall enough inside
For life's un calculated ride.
