MEANING

MEANING Can meanings of words run out A bit like when a battery is low No longer quite able to sustain The punch we’ve come to know Now, like a devalued currency Almost worthless copper coins Once proud, yet now destitute As the sad queue it finally joins Maybe love is now such a word Of deep feeling, a pale reflection Once was used, but now abused Unworthy of much introspection It doesn’t even feel like evolution As words get replaced by others It is like a weakening generation Always hiding under the covers A subtle trend, but all’s not lost If we might alter our behaviours Trying more speech and singing Could poets now be our saviours

Most of the time, I enjoy seeing the evolution of words. Recently, though, I've seen the demise of some words with twinges of anger and sadness. Some words are deemed 'not woke enough' while others supposedly are racist. What the heck. Who will save these words? Poets and writers, of course. I loved the flow and rhyme scheme of your poem. Liked the imagery in these words: like a devalued currency Almost worthless copper coins Have a splendid evening, Sara
