Me and My Guitar

I'd grown tired of all the stress and worries of my life. I thought it might be best to take a rest. I’d hop into my car and drive off into the starlight Without a real direction, maybe vaguely west… Gonna get away! Gonna get into my car. Gonna get away! Gonna drive so fast, so far. Gonna get away! Gonna be just who we are. Gonna get away! Just me and my guitar. So, I told my family the dream, the scheme, the plan. My quest for the place where I belong. “What a great idea,” they said. “We fully understand. Is it possible that we could maybe come along?” Gonna get away! Gonna get into my car. Gonna get away! Gonna drive so fast, so far. Gonna get away! Gonna be just who we are. Gonna get away! Just my family, me and my guitar. On the day we left we were given a surprise. Just outside our door stood all our friends. A look of hope was plainly written there within their eyes. What choice did I have but to let them all join in? Gonna get away! Gonna get into my car. Gonna get away! Gonna drive so fast, so far. Gonna get away! Gonna be just who we are. Gonna get away! Just my family, my friends, me and my guitar. And so it was, we set off happily. Just knowing that our future had begun. And suddenly, looking up ahead I clearly see A guy who wore a backpack… He was sticking out his thumb…. Gonna get away! Gonna get into my car. Gonna get away! Gonna drive so fast, so far. Gonna get away! Gonna be just who we are. Gonna get away! Just my family, my friends, a hitchhiker, me and my guitar. We drove a little ways, hands and feet all sticking out. Still, I felt good, please don't get me wrong. Then looking in the rearview, all those faces wore a pout For just outside a mangy mutt was trotting right along. Gonna get away! Gonna get into my car. Gonna get away! Gonna drive so fast, so far. Gonna get away! Gonna be just who we are. Gonna get away! Just my family, my friends, a hitchhiker, a stray dog, me and my guitar. Well, I'd stopped being happy, but I was the only one. Everyone was smiling except me. In my heart I feared that it had only just begun. Then, sure enough, a broke down car, a stranded family… Gonna get away! Gonna get into my car. Gonna get away! Gonna drive so fast, so far. Gonna get away! Gonna be just who we are. Gonna get away! Just my family, my friends, a hitchhiker, a stray dog, A stranded family, me and my guitar. We headed for a truck stop, for some gas and food and rest. I swear what happened next is really true. A trucker hopped into the car, an uninvited guest And before I could complain, a waitress jumped in, too. Gonna get away! Gonna get into my car. Gonna get away! Gonna drive so fast, so far. Gonna get away! Gonna be just who we are. Gonna get away! Just my family, my friends, a hitchhiker, a stray dog, A stranded family, a trucker and a waitress, me and my guitar. We finally made it to the ocean, much to my surprise. The place we thought none of us had been. But, we hadn't got away, we finally realized So back into the car and we headed home again...
