Notes About The Poem

Masquerade

Living in a masquerade
Hiding our truths in the shade
Veiled Behind electronic devices
The Physical world Minimises

Concealed behind a blue and white light
No melatonin released at night
Our brains don’t accept it’s time to sleep
And every day we’re on repeat

A vicious cycle ceases to stop
When hid behind our phones and lap top

Wanting to be something we’re not
Living life through a mobile robot
Pupils straining , brains rearranging
Photograph your food , words misconstrued

We used to wear watches and read paper maps
Took photos with cameras , had real contact
We spent Summer days out in the fresh air , riding our bikes with the wind in our hair

Simulation , stimulation lost inside a lie
Isolation, modification , apps that beautify
Lacking essential social skills
Online Casino gives you thrills

Book shops closing , hackers disclosing
Filters , snaps of zombies posing
Selfie sticks and brains decomposing
Judging ourselves With an air of self loathing

Expectations of Instant gratification
Vulnerable souls face Victimisation
Predators and bullies target their prey
Illicit pictures on display

Conversations overthrown
Surrounded by people
Yet still quite alone

With one selfish text lives become wrecked
Took your eyes off the road just for a sec
Sirens arriving , little chance of surviving
All because of your self-absorbed driving

We hold it dearer than humanity
Ignorant and lost at sea
We need to find our way back to land
And release these crutches from our hands

There are some men in japan, they have life size dolls and treat them like girlfriends. Reminds me of the movie “Her”.

I don’t think I’ve seen that movie! I did however see a documentary on this. They said if something didn’t change soon, in about 40 years their population will shrink by a third! Each to their own, I try not to judge but it can’t be healthy to live like that :-) x

There is so much truth in your words, Elaine. I miss the way things used to be, those “wind in your hair” days, but I fear we’re too far gone to ever return. All the best to you. John

It’s interesting that we are craving connection and with our devices we are supposed to be more connected. Instead we are more emotionally disconnected than any other time in history.

True and unfortunately I can only see this getting worse with time as technology becomes more advanced x

I really like the line 'riding our bikes with the wind in our hair.' … Each generation has its unique challenges, I guess. We certainly had ours. :) gw

You bring out some truths of reality in this present age sad to say, Elaine, but liked it for its poetic craft with nice rhyme.

Hello Elaine, it seems that the computer ,cells phones has taken over to communicate with one another face to face. It does not seem right. Have a nice day my friend. x

Very well put. You've touched upon some very good points that are worthy of considering, especially the self absorbed driving. God bless you
