Marquis!

As I look back over my shoulder,
I see him watching me
I know there can be nothing between us
Because I know he is a Marquis

And though I may love him
And I know that he loves me
There can be nothing between us
Because he is a Marquis

We were never meant for each other
But each other is what we want
But instead I am to be a Queen
Destined to daunt and flaunt

I can not marry him,
Love him though I may
He is to far beneath me
I’m to be nothing more than a display

A plaything to the King
Until his boredom kicks in
I’m nothing but a pretty face
He cares not what’s within

He doesn’t want a smart woman
Just someone to breed him sons
I happen to be his fancy, now
I’m soon to be undone

He knows not what is in my heart
Cares not that I don’t love him
All I want is a life of love
But my prospects are looking grim

So I wave farewell to the one I love
And proceed to the gallows ahead
And ready myself to marry the King
While wishing it was a Marquis instead.
