Man, the Animal
Of the animal genus he,
yet he of a high species be.
Though ape-like features he may share,
that man is human, it is clear.
With gift of reasoning endowed
Man, above the dumb beasts, stands proud.
In his Creator’s image made
before his own free will was swayed.
Two hands he has, like apes he stands,
He even shares similar glands.
But just where biology ends
Is where man’s mastery extends.
Apes have hands, but do not play,
the violin, nor do they pray.
Same tongue they have, but cannot talk,
Though sometimes they do upright walk.
Where in the kingdom of the apes,
Is to be found, a book of shapes?
And where among, a group of chimps,
was found a book ‘bout girls and pimps?
Apes cannot write a book of prose,
though rescued from harsh nature’s throes.
They cannot read, or write, or spell,
nor can they sing a melody.
Among the vast animal lines,
you would not find a single shrine.
A statue of a great queen bee
In a beehive, you never see.
We say that animals are wild,
but truth be told, they are so mild.
With instincts built, they all conform
to their creator’s prescribed norms.
It is man that has broken out,
His maker’s laws he proudly flouts.
Man’s wildness proves he has a will
‘een though a brute, he’s human still.
So, do not equate man with beasts,
for above them he stands as priest.
O’er animals, man rules as king,
and this is a God-ordered thing.
