Notes About The Poem
Craig Cornish's Forts And Castles Contest ...20 Oct 25

Makeshift Fort

Strains of notes shuttle me back
to my grandfather’s makeshift -fort
crammed with songbooks, bows, and pipes.
Here, we would empty our shoulders
 from a rough sail;
he scattering fiddle tunes on painted halls--
his eyes half-closed ,melting the noise
of an anxious world, of teary wrongs.

‘Bathe in night's luster ’ he mused,
smitten by some Gerhwin's refrains...
and my rubber spine would bend with
violin strings weeping till we drowned
in trusses of orchestral magic...

Sometime in fall, dirge of nightfall exhumed
 his lust for old charm...
and my eyes fall on the moat of vagueness ,
lost in the maize of this space
utterly cold.damp. unsung,
plucking his strings so hastily uninvited.

Ahhh!! I like this one, Nette. I remember making a temporary fort in the den a few times for my grandsons to enjoy for a rainy or really cold afternoon. I see this as a great memory. Sara K

I liked your different take on the theme, Nette! We sure do build our forts differently, 'no? Enjoyed how you blended music into this and of how you paint such a sentimental memory here, vividly written, as is your forte. Big congrats on your first place win! Kamusta? Haha kabute talaga ako :p

Dear Nette, you’ve built a sanctuary out of grief and music, where every line feels like a bowed string trembling between love and loss. Your grandfather’s presence, I could almost hear the Gershwin refrains. With awe and tenderness, Autumn Blessings, Dear Nette, Daniel
