Maiden Hair Fern

For you, my lover and my friend,
this Maiden made of light green hair,
feathered fronds of fan-shaped leaves,
and fineness of its thin, dark stems.
Famed maiden-name of maidenhood
is formed in misty woodland wood.

I would you have this gift so green
I found along a rippling stream
to shade your face in summer's heat,
or place in vase with Queen Anne's Lace.

Welcome to soup. I hope your stay will be long and you share many amazing poems with us. A belated congratulations to you on your winning work. Way to go. I enjoyed reading it this morning. I like ferns but I am not familiar with many of their names so I will have to look it up. Thanks for sharing this one with us. Sara K

Thanks, Kim! I had just come back onto Poetry Soup recently after a two month absence and entered the contest right away. I am pleasantly surprised by my 4th Place.

Dear Moon Harp, I love how there’s a great textural contrast here between those "thin, dark stems" and the "feathered fronds." It captures that specific, fragile architecture of a maidenhair fern perfectly. Blessings, Daniel
