Low Rent

bare bulb; harsh light
tombstone gray wall.
share the bathroom
down shadow crammed hall.
rusty water; dusty carpets,
mattress on the floor
no roaches anywhere
the vile little vermin
left for greener pastures
cracked plaster patterns
laced with peeling paint.
this is where dying hope
rents lodging by the week
all the morose roomers
never make eye contact.
no-one ever speaks.
i know i don't belong
here with all the freaks
but, i'm going through
a rough patch, you know-
and, the rent is really cheap

I knew a place like this in Mojave, California. A friend of mine had to stay there temporarily and I was extremely uncomfortable every time I went to visit. Needless to say they were short visits. You really painted the picture vividly. Nicely done!
