Notes About The Poem
I really want to make this and companion pieces into children's books about friendship and love.
Love's Field
Love’s Field
Kevin Davis, 2026
Behind the trees where no roadway did roam
Lay a deep forest no insects called home.
On her daily flight today, the ladybug flew
High over the treetops to someplace new.
In the heart of the forest, a wide clover field,
With honeysuckle blossoms and joy it revealed.
She settled nearby, warm, safe, and content,
And felt gentle magic the meadowland sent.
“This is Love’s Field—what a wonderful place.
Tomorrow I’ll bring friends to share in its grace.”
A soft voice then spoke: “Where only love is spoken,
Happiness and joy for all go unbroken.”
So Lady danced among flowers, from bloom unto bloom,
And felt herself changing in color and tune.
Her wings shimmered green; her thoughts rearranged,
With a longing to share the love she had gained.
“Can I bring others to this wonderful field?” she asked.
“Yes, as long as they also come in love, unasked.
But tell those who come, if they come without love,
The field will not appear to them if they preach unlove.”
She knew in her heart she must carry this glow,
And bring it to all in the wide world below.
She stayed in the field till all needs were met,
Then flew home at dusk in a gold-violet sunset.
On the last tree she landed, where ladybugs lay,
Her kind settling softly to sleep till the day.
As she settled from the magic she knew,
She moved among ladybugs still dripping with dew.
There she found Joy, who blinked in surprise:
“Girl, look at you—what a marvelous sight!” she cried.
“Why?” asked Lady. “What’s different somehow?”
“Turn ’round,” said Joy, “and let me see you now.”
Lady turned slowly; Joy gasped at her back:
“A gold little heart where your black spot was—imagine that!
And your wings—they’re green, like new leaves in spring.
Oh, Lady, dear friend, what joys do you bring?”
“Such color, such glow, such warmth in your hue—
What wondrous place has awakened in you?”
Lady smiled softly. “I’ll show you tomorrow—
A field full of love that can brighten all sorrow.”
Lady slept then, and dreamed of the field,
Of all that its gentle enchantment revealed.
She dreamed of the friends she’d soon lead to that place,
To share in its warmth and its blossoming grace.
She’d show them the meadow, its clover from above,
And all they would taste of its sweetness and love.
As she slept, she smiled; her joy was revealed—
In her dreams, her friends stood in Love’s Field.
At dawn she awoke to a soft amber glow,
The hush of the forest still thrumming below.
She stretched her green wings, still warm from the night,
And felt in her heart a new blossoming light.
Love’s Field was calling, as bright as the sun,
A promise of wonders she’d only begun.
She whispered to Joy, “Come along and you’ll see—
There’s magic in clover for you and for me.”
They lifted together, two sparks in the air,
With morning winds carrying promise to share.
Behind them the treetops bowed low as they passed,
For love’s gentle magic was spreading so fast.
And Lady felt certain, as sunlight unfurled,
That this was the dawn of a bright-blossomed world.
With Joy at her side and the forest ahead,
She followed the path where Love’s Field softly led.
