Love Or Lies

It began as a web of secrets and lies;
No one saw the tears in my eyes;
He told me he loved me;
But, of course he did, he's family;
We were so close - but that all changed one night;
Where my once innocent eyes were closed so tight;
He laid down and forced himself on me;
I was frozen with fear - why didn't I scream?;
I cried and pleaded for him to stop;
My begging increased as he got on top;
He tried to kiss me but I turned away;
He whispered to me "now I'll make you pay";
As he removed my pants all I could do was cry;
I was so scared and ashamed I wanted to die;
I could feel his breath on me and smell the stench of his cologne;
I was absolutely terrified and felt oh so alone;
He told me "this is what families do to show their love";
I prayed for him to stop and prayed to God above;
I just laid there and felt him force himself inside;
This was not okay - he must have lied;
This isn't love - families don't hurt one another;
I begged him to stop again while crying for my mother;
It hurt so bad and made me so afraid;
I didn't tell anyone until the following day;
Since we were both minors charges were never filed;
The police and judge said there'd never be a trial;
What he did has left me with emotional scars that haunt me;
Telling my story has opened my eyes and allowed me to see;
I am not alone in this world - many others have suffered;
Many say I'm stronger now - but I don't feel much tougher;
Even 14 years later I still have nightmares and flashbacks;
I've gone through so much - I want my life back on track;
Sometimes the memories make me feel as if I'ver gone wild;
Why did he do that to me - I was only a child?
So, the next time someone has the courage to open up;
Please know that them telling you is hard enough;
I am sharing my story in hopes that my story will be heard;
It had taken a lot of courage to say these words;
I was sexually assaulted on June 1st 2008 by a family member;
I try to make myself forget and wish I can't remember;
Opening up about my assault has been a huge step for me;
And, maybe one day, every survivor will be set free
