Lost In a Mirror of Youth

Fragile minds as soft as a newborn’s brow
Trying to accept the truth but don’t know how
In the world that they have created in their mind
Eyes wide open but to reality blind
Not a one can tell you how the world works
Or why all the old guys are such jerks

To know that they are perfect in every way
Their salvation and strength to face each day
A generation so different from those before
And changes made with no one keeping score
In the bloom of newness they talk of their paradigm
As if the world has shifted for now and for all time

In the time between brilliant thoughts and I told you so
Someone that came before that worked hard to see and know
Is thrown aside and told that in them there is no trust
And that old ideas are as useless as metal turned to rust
Lifetimes of learning are convinced that no value exists
But somewhere inside the heartbeat persists

The hope is not gone though the light is getting weak
And the old ones find no room for the truth that they seek
The youth of the day want to own it all and forever
The experience is discarded and the wisdom told never
The respect for those that broke the ground for the young to walk
And created the language of change for the young to talk

In my mind I hear the sound of tears falling
In my heart I hear the wisdom of the forest calling
And I know that between the words the ideas are right
In my heart I struggle against change and want to fight
For the beauty that was my time in the sun
But now is the time to let go and be happy in a race well run
