Look Farther

They always tell me "stop seeing what isn't there"
I say, look harder... past the appearance... through to the bare
They look at me confused, stuck like a deer in a glare
Seemingly refusing to adjust their stare
Still dumbfounded they ask "where?"
I say, past the acrylic nails, color contacts, and extensions of hair
Past the skimpy dressed body shaped like a pear
Past the facade of "I don't care"
Into the soul that's experienced a couple of tears
Into a life that's had to walk through the devil's lair
Without judgement, to see a human being, to you I dare
