Like Writing On the Sand
Like Writing on the Sand
By Elton Camp
Seventy times I’ve seen the old year disappear
A new one arrives with renewed hope and fear
Throughout history the cycle has been the same
As if life is merely a cheerless, pointless game
A generation will come and then it will go
Too soon, their lives and names none will know
Unstoppably, time determinedly marches on
What has taken place in the past is forever gone
Storied or noted ancestors there’s no need to extol
For the record of the past is in nobody’s control
Whatever in the present moment may come to be
Time may wash away and no evidence can we see
But we must never be tempted to give in to despair
At an unknown time, God’s Kingdom will be there
Countless billions, now totally forgotten by men
The great Jehovah will then bring to life again
